Svatopluk Souček comes to Carolina as the Dorothy Ford Wiley Visiting Professor of Renaissance Culture. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan, and been a librarian at Columbia University, the University of Michigan, and Princeton University. He is currently the bibliographer for Persian and Turkish areas in the Asian and Middle East Division, The New York Public Library. His field of research covers the history of the Middle East, with focus on naval history and the history of Central Asia. His books include Persian Gulf: Its Past and Present (Mazda Publishers, 2008), A History of Inner Asia (Cambridge University Press, 2000), and Piri Reis & Turkish Mapmaking after Columbus: The Khalili Portolan Atlas (Oxford University Press, 1996). This talk draws on his current book project.
