Paroma Chatterjee's research focuses on a novel idiom for depicting saints that emerged both in Byzantium and Italy, and the consequences of novelty, changing concepts of sanctity, and cross-cultural exchange on the prevailing visual discourse. Her academic interests include textual and pictorial narrative, concealment and revelation, the creation (and sometimes destruction) of cult images, the delights and discontents of illusionism, and silent cinema.
Recent publications include an essay in the volume Approaching the Holy Mountain, eds. Robert S. Nelson and Sharon E.J. Gerstel (Viator Press), and an article in the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies.
